A crowd of more than 30,000 attended the the event on Sunday at Glasgow's Hampden Park.

Other acts appearing included Blue, Liberty X, Sugababes, Mis-Teeq, Busted, Girls Aloud, Dannii Minogue, Blazin Squad, Kym Marsh and Lisa Scott-Lee.

A spokeswoman for the event said: "We are disappointed to confirm that Gareth has cancelled his scheduled appearance due to illness.

"We are sure all of Gareth's Scottish fans would like to join everyone here at the event in sending him all our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Dry day

Pop Idol contestant and chart-topper Darius, from Bearsden, near Glasgow, and Fame Academy winner David Sneddon, from Paisley, were also taking part in the event.

Gates' record label said on Monday: "He's fine. He went to hospital on Friday, but was discharged the next day. He's just been pushing it a bit. He's been working very hard and hasn't had much time off. He's resting now."

Last year, the one-day event was cancelled 48 hours before it was due to start when Bellahouston Park in Glasgow was flooded by heavy rain.

A spokeswoman for PA WeatherCentre said the crowd could expect a mostly dry day with temperatures reaching 18C.
