Debt worries grown on island

Debt enquiries have risen by almost 50% in Jersey

The number of Jersey people with money worries has risen.

Jersey's Citizens Advice Bureau has reported a rise of nearly 50% in the number of people needing help with debt problems.

Consumer problems were the most frequent reason for people visiting the advice bureau, while legal, housing and relationship worries were all down on the previous year.

But it was still a busy year for the staff, who dealt with nearly 18,000 enquiries and 3,000 outstanding cases.

Problems paying tax accounted for 8% of debt worries.

In the report, the bureau repeated its call for PAYE, saying Jersey's current method of collecting tax was inappropriate in a modern society.
