The Pentagon says there are more than 250,000 US military personnel in the Centcom region, which covers the Middle East, south-west Asia and north-east Africa. In late March the US was preparing to send another 120,000.

Some 45,000 British military personnel are involved in operations in the region, while Australia has sent about 2,000 troops to the Gulf.
