Question and Answer
I'm a RnB producer just about to make some hits. What 's the best thing to do with my demo cd? Do I give it to high profile DJs, send it to radio stations or give it to industry people?

Good to know you're going to be a hitmaker !

Once your trax are ready you definitely need to get it to as many industry heads as possible which includes other artistes and writers as well as A&R and execs.

Primarily, to get rep as a producer, the most important people to link with are artistes who feel your music or your sound and really want you to produce them. A&R personel for record labels, as well as artiste managers, are the ones always looking for a fresh new sound for their acts and you can demo what you do with just instrumental (no vocal) ideas.

Of course you need your demo in the hands of anyone in the biz who will listen but its worth going to talent nights or gigs and getting your trax to as many acts relevant to your sound as possible. A&R people have a lot more time for producers, who might be carrying the next big sound , than acts so make appointments at labels to see them.

DJs, high profile or not, always know acts around town and aspiring vocalists so do get your demo out to as many as possible at club nights etc.

Good luck with it and I'd love to hear your trax myself. Forward to Ras Kwame, 1Xtra, PO Box 1X, London W1A.
