Eighteen members of Zanzibar's main opposition party are due to go on trial on charges of conspiracy to overthrow the island's government.

The defendants, most of whom were arrested at a political rally over a year ago, have complained over delays by the prosecution.

Several European countries have expressed concern over the trial and have threatened to halt development aid as a result of the island's human rights record.

If convicted, the defendants face possible execution or life imprisonment.
