Argentine Senate passes labour reforms

The Senate in Argentina has overwhelmingly approved a controversial labour reform bill which led to violent clashes outside parliament last week.

The government says the measures, which are part of a package of economic reforms, will help create jobs and bring the country out of recession; unions say the new law will lead to lower wages and water down workers' rights.

As the vote took place, a number of people were injured in northern Argentina during renewed protests against the bill, which is expected to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies in the next few hours.
