| Thursday, 15 February, 2001, 21:56 GMT Awards flow for Billy Elliot ![]() Billy Elliot's makers and actors celebrated five awards Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell has picked up the best newcomer title at the London Film Critics' Circle awards, with the movie scooping a further four accolades. The heart-warming tale of an aspiring ballet star was named British film of the year while Julie Walters, who played a dance teacher, beat Kate Winslet and Emily Watson to be named best British actress. The film's other successes at the awards on Thursday were British producer of the year for Greg Brenman and Jonathan Finn and best British director for Stephen Daldry.
Despite his growing number of awards, 14-year-old Bell failed to make the shortlist for the Oscars. However, he has been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Bafta and has won numerous awards including a Variety Club Showbusiness Award for outstanding new talent. He is due to present a prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on 11 March. Jim Broadbent was named best British actor for his role as W S Gilbert in Mike Leigh's period piece Topsy-Turvy.
Veteran actor Richard Harris, whose movie triumphs include A Man Called Horse, took the special achievement award. Best British supporting actress went to Samantha Morton for her role in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown. Low budget US hit Being John Malkovich won three titles including film of the year and best director for Spike Jonze, while Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon won best foreign language film of the year.
