| Friday, 5 April, 2002, 15:42 GMT 16:42 UK Wright scores at race awards ![]() Ian Wright signed an exclusive deal with the BBC Soccer star turned TV presenter Ian Wright has been named personality of the year at the Race in the Media Awards. The chat show host was honoured for his "unique position as an important role model and positive influence". Channel 4 was named broadcaster of the year for its season How Racist is Britain? The BBC swept the board in the radio categories with Radios 1, 4 and Five Live picking up awards. The awards are organised by the Commission for Racial Equality to encourage informed coverage of race relations, diversity and multi-culturalism. BBC newsreader Moira Stuart and GMTV's Eamonn Holmes hosted the event at the Savoy Hotel in London.
Coronation Street picked up the accolade of best soap for the work it has done in introducing ethnic characters and their use in storylines. The best factual television programme went to BBC Knowledge's Black Messiah and The Lab, on digital channel Artsworld, was named best entertainment show. Radio 1's Boo! M to the C! show won best radio entertainment music. Radio 4 picked up best factual programme for Race Myths and best drama for Barrel Boy. Ian Wright retired from football in 1998 after a successful career with Crystal Palace, Arsenal, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Burnley and England. He made his TV debut later that with his own LWT show, Friday Night's All Wright. He signed an exclusive deal with the BBC in 2001, taking over from Ant and Dec on the game show Friends Like These as well as working on Radio Five Live with fellow ex-Palace player Mark Bright. He was awarded the MBE for his services to football in 2000.
