The Italian Job is a remake of the 1969 classic

The Hollywood remake of the 1969 hit took �2.3m over the weekend, surpassing Calendar Girls which took �1.8m.

Horror thriller Underworld, starring Kate Beckinsale, made its debut at number three, taking �1.4m.

Disney fantasy Pirates of the Caribbean came in fourth, adding to its box office haul of �24.6m over the past seven weeks.

The UK success of the movie, starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, is mirrored around the world, with its $270.5m (�163.2m) total ensuring it remains the biggest film of the moment.

Other top UK 10 movies include American Pie 3: The Wedding at number five and Jeepers Creepers 2 at six.

The only other new release was the Merchant Ivory international comedy Le Divorce, starring Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts.

It entered the chart at number 13, taking just �93,061 from 75 screens around the UK and Ireland.

The Oscar-winning Japanese animation film Spirited Away is performing strongly, taking �368,300 in the two weeks since its release, despite being shown on only 51 screens.
