Academy Awards keep February date
Peter Jackson
Peter Jackson's The Return of the King took 11 Oscars this year
The next Oscar ceremony will take place in late February for the second year running, despite criticism of its date.

The 2005 Academy Awards will be handed out on 27 February, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

This year, the event was moved from its traditional late March slot in an attempt to rejuvenate TV ratings.

Some academy members said the earlier date gave them little time to watch films released at the end of the year before their votes were due.

Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein also claimed Cold Mountain failed to win a best picture nomination because its December release date was too close to the ceremony.

Audience boost

He said they "plain ran out of people who had seen the movie" while gathering support from Academy Award voters.

Other prize ceremonies, including the Baftas and the Directors' Guild of America awards, were moved to earlier dates so they could take place before the Oscars.

Live TV coverage of this year's Oscars ceremony was watched by 43.5 million in the US - up 32% from last year.

Ballots for the next Academy Awards will be sent out on 27 December for members to vote on films released in 2004. Nominations will be announced on 25 January 2005.
