BBC Radio 4: Crossing Continents: Malaysia

BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents looks at the divide among races in Malaysia and speaks to the new generation of Malaysians pushing for more equality after decades of a system of racial preferences.

Reporter Mukul Devichand spoke to 22 year old undergraduate Luqman Ul-Hakim Bin Muhhammad Idris, who studies at the Universiti Intstitute Teknologi Mara - a university for Malay students only. He firmly believes the university should be open only to the bhumiputras - or 'sons of the soil'. In 2007 he led a student protest when it was proposed that other races should also be admitted to the university.
