Anti-drugs drive targets children

A 13-year-old was reported for alleged possession of heroin

The move comes after two people thought to have have taken drugs died in Scotland.

Also in Scotland, a 13-year-old boy was allegedly found in possession of heroin.

He told the BBC's Breakfast with Frost programme, that change would not occur overnight.

He said: "What's been happening over the last nine or 10 months is that we have put the foundations together for action which will make an impact as the years go by."

Scottish health minister Sam Galbraith is due to launch the European Drug Prevention Week in Scotland on Monday.

He said: "Partnership working is vital and we are determined to drive the scourge of drugs from our communities."

The Scottish Office has provided more than 250,000 for the week, with grants to more than 50 groups to stage events.

Prisons in particular are staging events to highlight the problem.

Stathclyde's three-day sequence of drugs tragedies began on Friday when the body of Ian Grant, 32, was found in a shed in the garden of his home in Viewpark, Lanarkshire.

Police say a full report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Late on Saturday night Annette McCallum, 21, from Airdrie area, was taken ill at a disco at the Bothwell Park hotel in Viewpark. She later died in hospital.

A 33-year-old-man is expected to appear in court tomorrow at Hamilton facing charges related to the alleged supply and possession on drugs.

She is believed to have taken the rave drug Ecstasy, and if confirmed, hers would be the 11th Ecstasy death in Scotland in recent years - of which the youngest was a boy of 13.

In Glasgow, a 15-year-old youth is to be reported to child welfare officials after allegedly being found in possession of Temazepam and cannabis.

And in what police call another "disturbing" incident in Glasgow, a 13-year-old boy is to be reported after allegedly being found with heroin in the Ruchill district.
