Celtic strips recalled

Umbro "deeply regrets" problems with the strip's fabric

Sportswear manufacturer Umbro is recalling thousands of Celtic football shirts because of a production fault.

The club is unhappy with the quality of the new strip, which was launched last week.

BBC Scotland's Asad Ahmad reports on the strip withdrawal
About 30,000 of the shirts, priced at 42.99 are thought to have been sold.

A Celtic spokesman promised that every buyer would get a replacement.

He said: "We are extremely upset and disappointed that a company of Umbro's repute, which supplies other industry leaders such as Manchester United and Ajax, as well as the England and Scotland national teams, should provide a product of this quality to Celtic and its supporters.

"In fairness to Umbro, they have admitted fault and apologised to Celtic and its supporters.

"Umbro made the decision following talks with Celtic and after carrying out their own tests, to stop production, source new quality material, re-start production and guarantee that everyone who has purchased a kit will be given a new high quality replacement."

Head of marketing for Umbro International, Martin Prothero, said: "The new Celtic kit has been fantastically well received by the fans and we deeply regret that problems experienced with the fabric have led to our decision to withdraw the shirts.

"For many years Umbro has built a reputation founded on delivering quality products and do not wish to compromise those standards.

"We apologise to the club and to the fans who have already purchased a shirt and assure them that the new shirts available at the end of September will meet our normal high standards."
