Audio slideshow: The miners' strike

The bitter industrial dispute that started in March 1984 saw picketing miners pitched against police officers, and colleagues - so called scabs - who chose to return to work.

Here - accompanied by a musical soundtrack from the time - look back to the sights and sounds of the strike.

Includes BBC archive of miners, their families, former NUM president Arthur Scargill, and former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
