Refitting work on a nuclear submarine at the navy's Devonport Dockyard has resumed after it was suspended following radioactive leaks. Twenty litres of Cobalt 60 was spilled during a test on HMS Victorious at the Plymouth yard in June.
The Environment Agency served an enforcement notice which led to a review of all arrangements for handling radioactive waste in the dock.
Dockyard owner DML said the spillages were contained within the dock.
Cobalt 60 is a radioactive isotope. It is used in radiotherapy in hospitals; and also for industrial radiography, a process similar to taking X-rays which is used to detect structural flaws in metal parts.
