There are a number of companies and charities out there that offer immediate free advice, such as Citizens Advice, external, Step Change, external or National Debtline, external.

For water companies, you may be entitled to go on the Priority Services Register, external.

For customers receiving benefits, the Water Direct scheme may be available, check with the water company in your area.

Companies may also offer debt-support or debt-matching schemes, often called 'Resolve' or 'New Start'.
