Breaking the Chains is a major national initiative that throughout 2007 focuses on commemorating the bi-centenary of the abolition of the slave trade, which took place on 25th March 1807. In the West Midlands the BTC network consists of community and voluntary sector groups, public / statutory sector bodies and representatives from the commercial sector, who have come together to contribute too and support this national programme at a regional level. BTC aims to raise awareness about slavery in all its forms, increase the understanding of the enslavement of Africans and its legacy, to provide a platform for cross-cultural dialogue, and to highlight commemorative resources. The networks main objectives are to provide support and co-ordinate a range of projects across the region, including engaging communities in the 2007 commemoration events. Look out for events, films, exhibitions, radio shows, across Birmingham and the West Midlands at Community Centres, Museums, Libraries, Arts Centres and many other venues.
