RHS Garden Wisley

The flagship RHS Garden at Wisley is one of the most popular gardens in the country welcoming more than a million visitors every year – in fact, it is the second most visited garden in the UK. It was envisioned from the beginning as a living laboratory for experimentation and education in horticulture and continues in this vein today: scientific work undertaken at Wisley provides gardening knowledge and best practice that benefits the nation. Here you’ll find one of the largest living plant collections in the world with around 30,000 plant varieties and six National Collections of plants – Crocus, Epimedium, heathers, rhubarb, gooseberries and redcurrants.

There’s plenty to see all year round, including the famous 128-metre long Mixed Borders leading up to colourful Battleston Hill; the Glasshouse, a soaring, Cathedral-like space the size of ten tennis courts which is home to more than 5,000 tropical and tender plants; and the Rock Garden, originally built in 1912 and containing a stream and numerous waterfalls lined with alpine plants and small trees. In 2017, a new Exotic Garden was opened to show how a tropical-style planting of palms, cannas and dahlias could be created in a UK climate, and in spring 2018 Wisley opened its new Wisteria Walk, the longest in the country at 75 metres.

There is always something happening, from family fun during the school holidays to exciting installations like the Glow illuminations which light up the Garden over the festive season and the Wisley Flower Show in September. For more information and to find out what’s on, visit the website.
