What are Dameons? His Dark Materials

Daemons are a reflection of your inner-self, that manifest in a physical form. They have human intelligence, some can talk, and dameons of young children are often able to shape-shift into other forms. When children go through puberty and start to grow up, the daemon goes through a process whereby they take the form of an animal, and that's the permanent form they'll stay in. The animal it becomes is the best representation of the person's character.

Daemons' behaviour often reflects that of their humans - so if humans are enjoying each others' company, or fighting, so will their daemons.
