Complaint

Four viewers objected to the participation of two members of the audience who had entered the country illegally, which in their view skewed the discussion.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the BBC’s editorial standards of impartiality.

Outcome

This was a special edition of the programme, from Dover, devoted to the topic of immigration.  Anticipating that the entry into the UK of migrants in small boats would be a significant aspect of the discussion, the producers invited two asylum seekers who had entered the UK on small boats, and whose applications for asylum had now been accepted, to join the audience and give their opinions. The fact that they had entered via an illegal method was made clear to viewers, and the members of the panel had been given prior notice that they would be taking part.  In the ECU’s view their participation did not skew the discussion but helped to inform it.
