Rachael Returns

BBC Cornwall's worldwide traveller Rachael Hunt has spent 18 months travelling. During her time away she's kept a diary for the BBC Cornwall website. Now Rachael sends her final diary entry, as she returns home to the county.

It's been a long time coming, but this is it folks – my final diary.

Now as some of you may know, I have been a wee bit slack as I have been back for a few weeks now and the last time I wrote was back in November. My apologies everyone, I have no proper excuse apart from the fact that I was having such a blast in my last few months of my trip that I didn't have the time to do it – sorry. But here I am to fill you in on those final months. Now let me pick up from where I left off, I will try and keep it brief.

Christmas Day on the beach

Jenny was on her way to see me in Melbourne for my 25th birthday and that was one hell of a time we had....shopping, bars, sights and yummy food (obviously the most important). Then it was back to Sydney to find yet another job and that happened after a few weeks of chilling out in the sun on Bondi beach – oh how I miss the sunshine.

Again it was yet another waitressing position in a cafe which was situated just across the road from Bondi beach – the only good thing about it. You see, I didn't really click with the people there and when the time came to leave I was actually quite relieved. It was then time for Christmas and New Year – which were awesome – yet another part of my life that is full of fantastic memories.

Christmas day was spent at Stanley Park south of Sydney – a lovely beach where we played cricket, frisbee and frolicked in the sea. Amongst having fun in the sun and eating chocolate, I spent my time spending my final few weeks with friends – some of whom I miss greatly – you know who you are! Before I knew it, it was New Year's Eve and was that a hot day!

Mrs Macquaries Point

A packed Mrs Macquaries Point on New Year's Eve

Some friends and I went to watch the fireworks from Mrs Macquarie's Point down near the Opera House – we had to arrive there around 10am to try and get a good spot (bear in mind the fireworks don't actually start till midnight) We managed to bag a pretty good spot near the front and then spent the rest of the day literally baking in the sun – but it was worth it as when it came to midnight we were all in awe.

A truly amazing show and well worth the sweat! Most people here back in England spend New Year’s Day recovering from the night before, but not down under – I was up and raring to go by midday and was at a music festival called Field Day – another scorcher of a day with some fantastic music and an awesome vibe.

After this it was the final countdown to the end of my year in Australia...sob sob...long days on the beach and chilled evenings out with friends. Then on the 7th January 2007 it was to board my final flight from Sydney, delivering me to my final destination – Auckland, New Zealand.
