About this site

'Les Choix' is an interactive drama aimed at young people aged 11-14. Filmed on location in Marseille, there are 12 short episodes exploring the theme of identity and covering several teenage issues such as friendship, love, crime and racism.

Each episode focuses on specific vocabulary and grammar. The exercises are based on a video of the story and the interactive activities reinforce the learning associated with each episode.

Full audio, keyword, and subtitle support as well as a glossary are available in French and Welsh.

There are two ways of accessing the activities:

1. Play individual activities
To play an individual activity, click on the episode tabs at the top of the screen to see a list of all the activities for that episode, then click on the activity.

2. Play through the Les Choix World
Click on the 'Dechrau' button to enter the world which contains 12 separate locations, each one associated with a particular episode.

The first location is the beach. Move your cursor over the beach scene to highlight four activities that are initially playable. Complete the video based exercises successfully then play the other activities.

To go to other episodes, click on the Menu button in the bottom left hand corner and then select La Carte. The locations of all the episodes are shown on the map of Marseille.

1. Belle caisse (Nice car)

Wow! Nice wheels! Ben picks up his cousin Alex in a new red convertible and takes him for a ride to the beach. With a car like that, everyone's bound to notice them but whose car is it really?

This episode focuses on:

• How to say something belongs to somebody using the word 'de'
• How to say 'the', 'a/an' and 'some'
• How to say you like something.

2. Tu t'es fait pincer (You're nicked)

Alex and Ben try to make a run for it, but Alex finds himself in big trouble as he's marched down to the police station. He gives his name, age and address. Will the police believe his version of events?

• How to ask and answer simple questions
• Using numbers 1 - 69.

3. Sale voleur! (Thief!)

After his brush with the law, Alex meets his best mate Malik in town. Music and girls are on the menu, but someone else turns up and he would like a word with Alex about his car!

This episode focuses on:

• Using the verbs 'avoir - to have' and 'être - to be'
• Imperatives - words that people use when giving an instruction.

4. Quelle fille! (That's some girl!)

Gossip is spreading about Alex, but his thoughts are elsewhere when he meets the gorgeous Jamila. Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship?

• How to use the words for 'my'.

5. Elle est comment? (What's she like?)

Wow! After a chance meeting with Jamila, Alex's head is all in a spin! He wants to find out more about the lovely Jamila, but does Malik have all the answers? Does Alex stand a chance or is she out of his league?

This episode focuses on:

• How to say you like doing something, using 'aimer' plus infinitive
• How to say 'I', 'you', 'he', 'she' or 'we'.

6. Les étrangers (Foreigners)

Down at the coffee shop, Justine and Anaïs are spreading the latest gossip. Someone's in trouble with the police, but why does Justine blame Malik?

This episode focuses on:

• How to make longer sentences, with conjunctions 'mais' and 'et'
• How to say where you come from.

7. De bons amis (Just good friends)

Jamila's mum tries some matchmaking, but who really fancies who? Malik goes to pick up Jamila but her mind is on something, or someone, else...

8. Pas un mauvais garcon (Not a bad lad)

Is Alex really such a bad boy? Everyone is bad-mouthing him, but his grandad knows him best. Discover what Alex is really like.

9. Tu l'aimes? (Do you like him?)

The sun is shining in Marseille, so everybody heads for the beach. Jamila chats to Justine and Anaïs about who she likes. Who is the lucky guy?

• How to say how often you do something, using adverbs of time and frequency.

10. Ce n'est pas mon style! (Not my style!)

Justine and Anaïs are getting dressed up for a trip into town and decide to give Jamila a makeover. But does she really need their help?

This episode focuses on:

• How adjectives change to agree with nouns.

11. C'est ton choix (It's your choice)

With Alex in the clear, Grandad finally confronts Ben about stealing the car. Can Alex ever forgive his cousin?

12. La rencontre (The meeting)

Love is in the air, it's the weekend and everyone is out in town. Can Jamila see past Alex's bad reputation? Who will she believe?

This episode focuses on:

• How to give your opinion
• How to say 'a little', 'a lot' or 'quite'.

Bande Dessinée

This is a comic strip in which recognisable characters from the drama are represented in an engaging story.

It features the rich use of sound effects and minimal language. You can click through it at your own pace. It helps you get to grips with the plot and characters and to predict what will happen in the story and what the characters might say as the story develops.

This activity features in all 12 episodes.

Interactif

Each episode features an interactive activity based on characters or scenes from the story that help you learn useful vocabulary.

Episode 1 - Voiture de Sport

Explore Ben's nifty convertible car and get to know what the parts are called in French. Everything works at the click of a button: the lights, the stereo, the horn and lots more.

Episode 2 - La Carte d'Identité

All French people must carry their ID card at all times. Have look at Alex's card, find out how tall he is and have a look at his photo.

Episode 3 - Le Site Web de 'You Are'

'You Are' are Marseille's coolest rap group, and they're also Alex and Malik's favourite. Have a look at their website to check out Paula G, Cyclone and the other band members.

Episode 4 - L'avis de Recherche

The police are on the lookout for a couple of car thieves. Do Alex and Ben fit the description? Read this authentic police poster to find out.

Episode 5 - Le Journal de Jamila

Read Jamila's diary to find out about her daily routine. She's a busy girl: going to school, meeting friends, and playing sport - how does she fit it all in?

Episode 6 - Le Téléphone Portable

Who's calling? Listen in to the phone messages on Justine's interactive mobile, and check her text messages to catch up on the latest gossip about Alex and his mates.

Episode 7 - La Chambre de Jamila

What kind of person is Jamila? Have a look in her bedroom to find out what she's like and what she gets up to.

Episode 8 - Le Supermarché Interactif

Alex is running errands for his grandad at the supermarket, but what will he buy?

Episode 9 - L'album de Justine

Gossip Justine knows everything about everyone, but who are her friends and what does she say about them? Find out by looking through her photo album.

Episode 10 - L'armoire de Justine

Think you've got style? Check out Justine's wardrobe to see if you would be seen wearing any of her clothes!

Episode 11 - Le Télévision Interactif

What's on the box? Check out what characters Alex and Ben are watching on this interactive TV set.

Episode 12 - Le Plan Interactif

Alex and Ben are on their way out, but where are they going? Listen to the instructions and click to follow their route on this interactive map - can you get them to their final destination?

Inter-Action

Use this verb tool to see common French verbs animated and performed by the characters Léo and Léa. There is support throughout with instructions and feedback, as well as 'clue' functions to give hints where you are encountering difficulties.

Choose your character then choose an activity.

Activities include:

• Commander - tell Léo and Léa what to do
• Choisir - select and watch a verb
• Retrouver - put letters in the right order to spell a verb
• Deviner - guess what Léo or Léa are doing.

Verbs are arranged alphabetically and by group: - er, -ir and -re verbs - with common irregular verbs given particular focus.

The four different Inter-Action activities focus on different aspects of using French verbs:

Episode 3: Recognise and spell infinitives of -er, -ir and -re verbs

Episode 5: Conjugation of -er, -ir and -re verbs in the present tense singular forms 'I', 'you', 'he' and 'she'

Episode 8: Conjugation of -er, -ir and -re verbs related to housework, and conjugation patterns for singular and plural forms

Episode 12: Conjugation of -er, -ir and -re verbs in the present tense for sentences using 'we', 'you', and 'they' and conjugation patterns for plural forms 'nous', 'vous', 'ils', and 'elles'.

Watching the video

You have full control over the video so that you can work at your own pace.

You can play the whole video (Tout) or play it phrase by phrase (Phrases).

The script for the episode can be printed out by clicking on the printer icon.

Video Activities

There are three types of exercises and each one has an easy and a hard level.

When you play through the Les Choix World you must play a sequence of these activities, starting with Le Bon Choix Easy. The next exercises you play will depend on how well you do.

Points are awarded for each of your answers and when playing through the Les Choix World, your success is measured by your points total for a game. If you want to watch a clip more than once before answering, click on a star token, but remember that it will cost you 100 of your hard earned points. The fewer times you repeat the clip, the more you score!

Le Loto (Bingo)

This is the easiest video activity. Watch a short clip of the video then click on the word or words in the list that are used in the clip.

Le Bon Choix (Cloze)

Watch the clip then choose the word or words you heard from the drop-down menu.

Le Case Vide (Gapfill)

This is the hardest video activity. Watch a short clip then type in the missing words on screen. Click on the â icon to use the virtual keyboard when you need to type accented characters.

La Chaîne des Mots

Guide the BMX rider around the playing area to collect the French words in the correct order while avoiding the obstacles and the train of words behind the bike.

You are given immediate feedback on your responses. A printable summary of the answers is given at the end of the game.

The six La Chaîne des Mots activities focus on different aspects of vocabulary:

Episode 2: days, months and dates

Episode 4: definite and indefininte articles - le, la, les, un, une, des

Episode 7: reinforcing understanding of the verb 'aller', to go

Episode 8: reinforcing understanding of the verb 'faire', to do

Episode 9: adverbs of time and frequency such as 'toujours', always, and 'd'habitude', usually

Episode 11: the construction 'il y a'.

Les Mots-Croisés

These are interactive crosswords to help you practise your French vocabulary.

Click on the crossword to see the illustrated Welsh clues. Type in the correct words and click on the â button to use a keyboard to type accented characters. Correct letters turn the squares green.

There is help available and a full word list to help with the more challenging answers.

There are two crossword activities:

Episode 1: Test your memory and your knowledge of car vocabulary

Episode 4: Test your memory and your knowledge of vocabulary for describing people.

Le Studio

This is a comic strip maker containing all the tools required to create a printable comic - all you have to come up with are good ideas for stories!

It provides background pictures, characters and objects from the story as well as speech bubbles and the text to put in them. You can change the size of objects and the direction they are facing.

You can save the work that you create in Le Studio on the computer that you are working on. When you save your work you are asked whether you want to log in. You will need to do this in order to create a profile. If you have previously created a profile on a computer you will be able to load your profile and your saved work on that particular computer.

Go to the profile management page in order to delete all or specific profiles from your computer.

Matchez Moi

This is an interactive speed dating game where you can find a friend or a partner by making choices based on your understanding of simple French questions and answers.

Search the database to find a choice of two potential partners or friends, then ask questions to find out if you're the perfect match. You'll practise reading and talking about your family, personality, likes and dislikes and hobbies.

The two Matchez Moi activities focus on:

Episode 5: practice in reading and recognising the key language of personal descriptions - facial descriptions and hair colour

Episode 12: further practice in reading and recognising the key language of personal descriptions and family, hobbies, physical descriptions and personality

MC des Mots

This is your chance to be a big shot record producer! Watch and listen as the MC drops his rhymes and help him get to the top of the charts.

Watch French sentences going past in front of you and decide which lever to pull to place the highlighted words into one of the categories provided. The more you get right, the more records MC des Mots sells.

There is an easy and hard level and a choice of one and two player modes.

These activities focus on:

Episode 1: identifying masculine and feminine pronouns 'le, la and les', 'un, une and des' as well as 'il and elle'
Episode 3: using and recognising the forms of the verbs avoir, 'to have', and être, 'to be'
Episode 5: using and recognising singular and plural subject pronouns 'je', 'tu', 'il', 'elle', 'on', 'nous', 'vous', 'ils', and 'elles'
Episode 10: identifying masculine and feminine adjectives
Episode 12: identifying verbs.

Mini Moi

This activity lets you build a mini-me of yourself using four categories of features: skin, hair and facial features; items of clothing; hobbies and pastimes; family and where you live.

Choose the words to describe your character and see your mini-me appear on screen. Put the words into the correct order to create a sentence describing what you want your character to have. You can hear any word that you choose.

Animated instructions are available when you click on the question mark icon.

You can save the work that you create in Mini Moi on the computer that you are working on. When you save your work you are asked whether you want to log in. You will need to do this in order to create a profile. If you have previously created a profile on a computer you will be able to load your profile and your saved work on that particular computer.

Qui est Qui?

This simple 'who's who' game focuses on reading and listening skills as you try to identify a selection of characters based on the information given in their ID cards.

You have three turns to view a selection of ID cards. By revealing text or audio only clues, you must then guess who is being described.

The three 'Qui est Qui?' activities have a different focus on vocabulary:

Episode 2: facial descriptions and hair colour

Episode 6: facial descriptions and hair colour, as well as age, height and clothing

Episode 9: family, interests and favourite things.
