Beethoven 6
This BBC NOW concert offers a gentle journey through three very different musical worlds — from lively drama to sparkling elegance, and finally to the peaceful beauty of the countryside. Conductor Tianyi Lu joins the orchestra, alongside two wonderful soloists: Alis Huws, former Royal Harpist, and Radio 3 New Generation Artist Elizaveta Ivanova on Flute.
The evening opens with Louise Farrenc’s Overture No. 2, a bold and colourful burst of energy. Farrenc’s music is being rediscovered by audiences everywhere, and this overture shows just how vivid and exciting her writing can be.
Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp brings a complete change of atmosphere. Bright, graceful and full of charm, it highlights the shimmering combination of two instruments that rarely share the spotlight — creating a sound world that’s instantly appealing.
The concert closes with Beethoven’s much‑loved Pastoral Symphony, a warm and joyful celebration of nature. From gentle streams and birdsong to a lively village scene and a dramatic storm, the music paints vivid pictures before finally settling into a feeling of calm.
Together, these works create an afternoon that’s easy to enjoy, full of character, and perfect for anyone looking to slow down, explore something new, and savour a moment away from the rush of everyday life.
