Billy Crystal

Analyze That

Interviewed byAlana Lee

Originally a standup comic, Billy Crystal began his acting career in the TV show Soap and made his first film debut in "Rabbit Test". He went on to star in more successful movies such as "This is Spinal Tap" and "When Harry Met Sally". A man of many talents, Crystal has also achieved success in producing, writing, and directing. He now stars alongside Robert De Niro in "Analyze That".

When you were filming "Analyze That", how did you avoid repeating gags from "Analyze This"?

There were some things that we wanted to repeat. The things that were successful in the first film. We tried to make it new and different but still have a continuation of their behaviour. We took on different complications with the characters so that it would feel like a different movie.

Was there much improvisation in the movie?

There was a great deal of improvisation when it seemed appropriate to try and make it better. Harold Ramis [director] is very good at letting us explore certain moments and embellish them if we can. The set was very relaxed and we had a good understanding of each other and our characters. It makes for a lot of fun. People ask if we improvised a certain scene when we hadn't. It's just because we were very natural and at ease with the material.

When you have a really successful first film, what is the most important factor when considering a sequel?

For me, it's a good story. Where does it go? Does it look cheap? How can it be funny? And basically, should we do this?
