About the author
James Walvin BA (Keele), MA (McMaster), DPhil (York) is Professor of History at the University of York. He is a leading expert in both modern British social history and the history of black slavery. He is a prolific writer on the slave trade; his books include Black Ivory: Slavery in the British Empire (Blackwell Publishers 2001) and The Trader, the Owner, the Slave: Parallel Lives in the Age of Slavery (Jonathan Cape, 2007). Currently Professor Walvin is currently working on various aspects of the African diaspora, focusing on the impact of Atlantic slavery on the development of modern Britain (post-1660). Professor Walvin is the co-editor of the academic journal Slavery and Abolition.
