 | | | | | | | | | "No rest for that Brute Maxwell!" General Maxwell, Commander-in-Chief, of the British army in Ireland ordered the execution of 14 rebels in May 1916. In this postcard Maxwell is tormented by his conscience as he struggles to sleep. A chorus of enraged women harangue him while he recalls one of the executions. There is a revolver on the bedside table suggesting that only death will assuage General Maxwell’s conscience. © | | |
