Effects of reunification

The fall of the Berlin Wall took place on 9 November 1989 and marked the reunification of East and West Germany.

Today the economic restructuring process is in full swing. The complete reorganisation of the economy in the new federal states has meant that many unproductive and unprofitable economic structures left behind by the former centrally planned system had to be eliminated. This has caused high levels of unemployement and comprehensive measures have been and will continue to be undertaken to cope with the situation.

Germany's competitiveness in the information society of the 21st century will largely depend on the innovations of the telecommunications sector. New technological developments will open up new fields for growth and above all new possibilities for creating additional jobs.
