Greetings

  • Guten Tag (or Tag ) is the standard greeting during the day

  • Guten Morgen (or Morgen ) is used early in the morning

  • Guten Abend (or N'Abend ) is used in the evening

  • Grüß Gott is a catch-all greeting used at any time by speakers from Southern Germany and Austria.
When meeting a business contact for the first time, expect to shake hands and exchange business cards. In some German offices shaking hands is part of the daily ritual, so don't be surprised if a round of handshaking precedes a day's work.

Use someone's title if you know it.
