Along with swimming, athletics has been a foundation stone of the Commonwealth Games since they began. In the new City of Manchester Stadium, athletics fans are guaranteed an outstanding feast of sporting prowess in 2002.

Manchester 2002's Elite Disabled Athletes (EDA) will compete in their own athletic events, alongside the events for able-bodied athletes, with the Men's Blind 100m and the Women's Open Wheelchair 800m.
