On this week's programme:
Michael shows that Flatley will get you everywhere |
TAPPING INTO THE MARKET First there was Riverdance. Then Lord of the Dance. Irish dancing became big business, with massive and identical shows playing simultaneously all over the world. And now the demand for talent is such that north west dance schools are producing the stars of tomorrow. Irish dance mogul Michael Flatley talks to Powerhouse about the phenomenon he inspired and we meet some of the region's young dancers who aim to emulate him. |
Alfie the band | SCHOOL OF ROCK What do you think would happen if a well-known band rehearsed and recorded a cover version of a great song with forty ten year olds? Well, Powerhouse had no idea either - but, inspired by the famous Canadian Langley School Music Project of the 70's, in which youngsters covered songs by the likes of David Bowie, we decided to find out. Good sport Manchester musos Alfie accepted the challenge - and the children of Crowcroft School in Longsight accepted AlfieÂ… And between them they tackled The Stone Roses track, Shoot You DownÂ… We think the results are different class, but you can watch Powerhouse to judge for yourselves. |
 New York? No Manchester |
ALFIE THE MOVIE From Alfie the band to Alfie the movie. The sixties classic starring Michael Caine has been remade with Jude Law in the title role. Much of the movie was shot in Manchester's Northern Quarter, which became New York for a six day shoot. Luckily for us, artist and filmmaker Michael Trainor was on hand to capture for posterity the transformation with his trusty Super 8 cine camera. Alfie opens at cinemas across the UK in the autumnÂ… |
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Imagine this nightmarish problem. You've moved into your dream home in Congleton, Cheshire. But one wall of the dining room is worryingly bare. You spend sleepless nights worrying about it and then it dawns on you: "Why not contact the Artist in Residence!" If you'd like to be featured on Artist in Residence - call 0161 374 5566 for further details. |
AiR EXHIBITION So far Artist in Residence Alex Williams has inspired five modern paintings and one sculpture. The artists like them, Alex likes themÂ… but what would two experts make of them? And which artwork above all would catch their eyes? We decided to find out. See what happens when an art critic and an auctioneer assess the art works and give them a value. You may want to give up your day job and take up art insteadÂ… |
