Two in court charged with man's attempted murder
BBCTwo men accused of trying to kill a man by stabbing him in the head, face and body have appeared in court.
Alex Steventon, 46, and Connor Challinor, 29, appeared at the magistrates' court in Carlisle charged with the attempted murder of a man in his 30s.
Cumbria Police said they were called to Edward Street in the early hours of Sunday. The man was taken to hospital for treatment and later discharged.
Neither defendant was asked to indicate a plea and they were remanded in custody to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on 1 May. A further three people were arrested in the aftermath of the attack, police said.
A man in his 20s, who was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, was bailed pending further inquiries.
Two women, one in her 40s and one in her 30s, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been released on police bail.
Steventon, of Denton Street, and Challinor, of Sybil Street, both in Carlisle, spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses.
Steventon, wearing a dark coloured padded jacket, and Challinor, dressed in a black jumper, appeared side-by-side in a court dock, flanked by security staff members.
The court heard the case was so serious it can only be dealt with at Carlisle Crown Court.
