Rail passengers faced major delays earlier after lines between Wolverhampton and Stafford were closed.

Train services running between the two sites were cancelled on Monday morning due to a police incident at Penkridge station. Some disruption was expected throughout the day, but lines fully reopened by Monday evening.

British Transport Police officers were called to the scene at 11:00 BST and National Rail warned that major delays were expected to continue until 16:00 BST.

"All lines have reopened following the emergency services dealing with an earlier incident between Wolverhampton and Stafford," said National Rail on X at about 19:00 BST.

Crosscountry, Avanti West Coast, and London Northwestern Railway services were affected by the disruption, with rail replacement buses set up between Wolverhampton and Stafford.
