Commercial waste contractors and gardening companies have been urged to avoid a landfill site after its closure due to flooding.

States of Guernsey said it followed heavy rain in the past 48 hours, with the ground left saturated at the Mont Cuet site.

The government added the closure would mainly affect commercial waste contractors and gardening companies because the majority of the island's waste was exported for recycling, energy recovery or disposal.

States Works had pumps in operation to deal with the flooding at the landfill site, however, it was expected to take "some time" before the facility could reopen, the States said.
