Community pulls together after school pupil death

Following the death of a pupil, the governor of a Surrey school says it is "truly wonderful" how the local community has pulled together.

More than £7,500 has been raised in aid of the family of a Year 8 child who died following a medical emergency at Collingwood College, Camberley on Monday.

Surrey Heath Borough councillor Shaun Garrett, vice chairman of governors at the school, says the community has "pulled together this past week following the tragedy in Collingwood".

Further tributes have also been paid to the pupil on social media following their death.

A letter seen by the BBC from the secondary school to parents said the college community was "deeply affected by this tragic loss".

All proceeds from the online fundraising page, set up by the parent body at the college, will go directly to the family, it said.

A spokesperson for Surrey Coroner's Court confirmed the death had been referred to the coroner.

South East Coast Ambulance Service, which attended the scene alongside Surrey Police, said it was called at about 14:10 GMT on Monday.

"A student was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Frimley Park Hospital in a life-threatening condition", it added.

Collingwood College is a co-educational secondary school with about 1,700 students.
