Emergency services were called to Hutcheon Street

Two people have been seriously injured in a crash involving two cars and an old ventilation shaft - which toppled over - in Aberdeen.

Emergency services were called to Hutcheon Street, close to its junction with Ann Street, just before 13:00 on Tuesday. The accident involved a Mercedes C300 and Volvo XC40.

Two men - the driver and passenger from the Mercedes - were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries. A third man, the driver of the Volvo, also attended hospital as a precaution.

The Volvo was badly damaged by the shaft, which had once formed part of a 19th Century railway tunnel.

The road was closed until 19:30 to allow an investigation to take place, and inquiries are ongoing.

Police Scotland urged anyone with information to contact them.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it sent four appliances and a specialist vehicle to the incident.

A Scottish Ambulance Service said it sent two ambulances, two special operations response teams and a critical care team to the scene.
