The University of Aberdeen has said it will open its campus in India later this year.

The institution revealed last year it had been granted permission by the Indian government to take forward proposals.

The university has now made an admissions call to aspiring students for its new branch campus in Mumbai after the venture was agreed.

It aims to open the facility in the suburb of Powai in August, with teaching beginning in September.

Initially, teaching will focus on artificial intelligence (AI), management, and computing and data science programmes.

Prof Peter Edwards, the University of Aberdeen's new principal, said entry into India reflected "global engagement" being a key theme for the institution.

"As we prepare to welcome our first cohort, we look forward to building a globally connected academic community and working to foster meaningful collaborations that support India's education and innovation ambitions," he said.

The University of Strathclyde's Business School previously had an operation in India, but no longer has a presence.

Prof Edwards took up his role in November.

He later said the University of Aberdeen managing to achieve a break-even financial position by 2028 would be a "real challenge".

He said while progress had been made in finding more than £5m of savings, there was still a "lot of work to do".
