Council set to approve demolition of flats
GoogleThe demolition of a block of flats dubbed "not financially viable" is set to be approved next week.
Gateshead Council is expected to agree to the demolition of Warwick Court, near the civic centre, which contains 111 flats but only six permanent residents.
The Labour-led local authority intends to rehouse the occupants by October and plans to knock the building down in early 2027.
An appraisal of the Warwick Street site found it would be too costly to bring up to modern standards and the redevelopment of the land, along with the nearby Gloucester pub, could be tied to the wider plans to regenerate High Street South.
Since the council earmarked the building for decommissioning in 2022 it has been used as temporary accommodation.
In the same year, the council also made the decision to demolish the nearby Eslington and Redheugh courts, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The blocks were built in 1965 and were previously home to about 200 people, but the buildings were also deemed unsustainable.
