A man died after collapsing while being detained by police on Merseyside.

The 59-year-old was stopped on Southport Road in Bootle at 12:24 GMT but became unconscious.

Merseyside Police said its officers administered CPR before taking him to hospital where he was declared dead an hour later.

The force said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as per usual procedure.

The man's next of kin has been informed.

The BBC has asked why the man was detained but no further detail has been released.

Part of Southport Road was cordoned off after the incident.
