Food waste collections to launch in April
BBCPeople in Chesterfield are to be asked to separate their food waste from the rest of their rubbish.
Chesterfield Borough Council said each household will be provided with a 23-litre food waste caddy before the weekly collections start in April.
The change follows government legislation requiring all councils in England to start collecting food waste separately.
The council said the caddies would be lockable to prevent animals getting in and the waste will be sent to a specialist recycling facility to be broken down to produce biogas and biofertiliser.
Martin Stone, the council's cabinet member for climate change, planning and environment, said: "We are really excited to be introducing our new food waste collection service.
"Everyone produces some unavoidable food waste including leftovers, eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds or vegetable peelings, and this weekly collection will make it easy for residents to recycle more while helping to reduce the amount of waste being sent for disposal."
