Plans to sell two council-owned car parks have been scrapped following opposition from businesses.

Southampton City Council had proposed selling the Amoy Street South and North car parks serving Bedford Place in the city centre.

More than 1,000 people signed a petition set up by nearby businesses opposed to closing the car parks, which provide 54 spaces

The council said after reviewing feedback, it had decided not to progress with its plans but that it could look at selling part of the sites instead.

It now plans to consult in the new year on an alternative proposal.

Objections received during the consultation included the impact on businesses and staff, as well as the effect on workers and daily users of the car parks.

Critics also said the sites were well-used and there was a shortage of parking options in the area, with concerns raised about the safety of multi-storey car parks and longer walks to other sites.

'Review parking'

Conservative opposition group leader Jeremy Moulton said the car parks were "key to the success of Bedford Place as a shopping area".

"I have been working hard to ensure the voice of business is listened to and suggesting to the council alternatives which could save money for the council whilst continuing to support needs of local businesses and people," he said.

Sarah Bogle, cabinet member for economic development, said the council was looking at selling some of the site and retaining part of it.

"It's important that whilst we look at options and proposals for Amoy Street car parks that we review the parking on offer across Bedford Place to ensure it is safe, accessible, and convenient for those who work and visit the area," she said.

The review of the car parks in Amoy Street is part of the Labour-run council's wider asset development and disposal programme.
