A new bridge spanning the River Trent in Nottinghamshire is due to have its official opening.

The 87m (278ft) Waterside Bridge, which connects Sneinton and Lady Bay, was built in Hucknall and lifted into place in November.

Transport Nottingham said the crossing will be opened to pedestrians and cyclists on 2 June before a community fun day is held there on 14 June.

The event will take place on both sides of the bridge with free activities, food stalls and community performances.

The newly widened and surfaced riverside footpath on the south side of the river will also reopen for use on 2 June.

The government-funded project has faced delays and increased costs but its opening marks the first new river crossing built in the city since 1958, when Clifton Bridge was erected.

Linda Woodings, executive member for regional development, growth and transport at Nottingham City Council, said: "Schoolchildren from the closest schools either side of the river will be on hand to help cut the ribbon as we celebrate our new Transforming Cities-funded bridge."
