The Met Office said the snow could cause travel disruption

A snow and ice warning has been issued for parts of the North East, as heavy snow showers are expected to move in from the coast.

The Met Office has issued the warning for Saturday for 24 hours with up to 1in (3cm) of snow expected widely, with up to 3in (8cm) in places such as the North Yorks Moors.

Areas closer to the coast will be affected, including in Northumberland, Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.

Travel is likely to be disrupted, the Met Office warned, with icy patches likely to affect untreated roads.

"The snow showers will gradually become lighter and less frequent during Saturday evening, and move offshore overnight," a spokesman said.
