Charity wants to help more people enjoy cycling
BBCA charity which helps more people enjoy cycling by offering sessions using adapted bikes is planning more sessions at a new venue.
Guernsey charity Wheels for You is to run weekly outdoor sessions, doubling its previous offering. Sessions will alternate between the new Victoria Avenue track and Les Beaucamps High School.
Co-founder Caroline Barby said the growth came after a surge in demand. "We knew the demand was there, but we didn't have the capacity," she said.
"It's not just about cycling. It's about getting active, but also about community. People come here, they see familiar faces, they have a cup of tea and a chat. It's a sense of belonging, and that's just as important."
Wheels for You provides adapted bikes and trikes for people who may otherwise struggle to access cycling.
Barby said exercise opportunities for less physically able islanders could be limited and its work aimed to help bridge that gap.
"There's still a lack of access in some areas," she added. "We're just one piece of the puzzle, but we're proud to be part of improving that."
Accessible cycling coordinator Rebecca Silk said the move to weekly sessions was a significant milestone for the charity.
"This year feels particularly special," she said. "Expanding across two venues and running sessions every week is a big step forward."
Alongside the cycling sessions, Guernsey's Health Improvement Commission is relaunching its adult cycle confidence programme in May.
