Three people have been arrested after a car full of suspected stolen goods was abandoned on a railway line, police say.

Wiltshire Police said a silver Vauxhall Insignia was driven through multiple railway gates and stopped on the line near Holt about 01:30 GMT, before the people inside left.

A Mazda was then stopped at 03:00 and the three occupants were arrested on suspicion of multiple different offences.

Services between Chippenham and Trowbridge, via Melksham, have been severely affected by the obstruction, with no trains running in the area.

The people in the car left it before being arrested in a different car later in the night, police said

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for an officer, going equipped for theft and theft of a pedal cycle.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, drug driving, going equipped for theft and theft of a pedal cycle.

A woman, 18, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and obstructing a police officer.

All three remain in police custody.

Great Western Railway (GWR) confirmed arrangements were being made to remove the car, explaining that no trains will be able to serve Melksham in the meantime.

Where possible, GWR said, services between Swindon and Westbury would be diverted in both directions.

The operator added customers with tickets routed via Melksham would be allowed to travel via Bath Spa at no extra cost.

Replacement road transport has been put in place between Chippenham and Westbury and customers can also use their tickets on the local Faresaver bus route X34 between Chippenham, Melksham and Trowbridge.

Anyone with a ticket on a cancelled service can travel on the next available service at no extra cost, GWR said.
