Work to begin on town's 'gateway' project
GoogleWork to prepare a key development site in Stafford begins this month.
The former Saint Gobain manufacturing site off Doxey Road will form part of the Stafford Station Gateway project, with new homes and businesses expected in the area.
Trial excavation ground works will take place at the 15-acre site to make it suitable for future development.
Main remediation works across the site will start towards the end of 2026 or early 2027 subject to planning consent.
Up to £16.5m will be allocated to the project, Stafford Borough Council said, with local communities and businesses consulted throughout the plans.
Council leader Aidan Godfrey said the project would help "transform" the town and help progress plans further.
"The Stafford Station Gateway project is another part of that overall vision to transform the county town, and the work underway on this key site will provide the catalyst for further progress of our ambitious plans.
"[It] will be a thriving, vibrant new community within the town where people want to live, work and visit and all sustainably connected to the railway station," he said.
Councillor Martin Murray said the site was a "significant area of the regeneration" that nearby communities and businesses would be kept up to date with plans.
"Seeing activity on site represents another milestone, instils investor confidence and helps us to build on our growth plans here at the beating heart of the country," he said.
