The new cameras are to be switched on at four locations across Lancashire

A council has warned drivers against breaking the law as it prepares to switch on a set of new traffic cameras.

Lancashire County Council's automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) devices are to be operational in four locations across Preston, Lancaster and Accrington "early in 2026".

Once live, drivers who ignore road regulations - such as turning bans and no-entry areas - will be issued a £70 penalty charge notice, reduced to £35 if paid within 21 days.

The council had been given the go-ahead to install the cameras three years ago, but it was revealed in December 2024 that they had not yet been switched on. The authority has clarified the delays were due to ensuring the cameras were "value for money".

The kit has been installed at locations where turning bans and no entry restrictions are in force, the Local Democracy Reporting Service has been told.

The authority could not clarify a precise switch-on date at this stage but said it was imminent.

"We've taken the time to make sure the new ANPR enforcement cameras represent value for money for residents before moving forward with enforcement," the council said.

"These powers play an important role in improving safety and traffic flow for all road users, particularly at locations where concerns have been raised by residents.

"We are preparing to introduce these powers early in 2026 – and we want to thank residents for their patience throughout this process."

The authority added: "We'll be watching you."
