Dundee pubs will be allowed to remain open during Scotland's World Cup matches this summer.

The men's national team is heading to North America to compete in their first World Cup since 1998.

However, due to the time difference its first match against Haiti will not kick off until 02:00 UK time on 14 June and the following two games - against Morocco and Brazil - start at 23:00.

Dundee City Council's licensing committee has granted a general extension to pub opening hours during the competition.

Under the agreed terms, the extension will be in place between 11 June and 19 July.

For Scotland matches, pubs will be allowed to stay open for up to 30 minutes after full-time. This includes the Haiti match.

Pubs may open until 01:00 or 30 minutes after the end of matches kicking off at 23:00 – whichever is later.

The extension will apply to all premises with an on-sales licence, provided they have permission to show televised sport.

Earlier this week, North Ayrshire's licensing board decided not to introduce a general extension which would allow pubs and bars to remain open for the late-night screenings.

Instead, businesses will have to make individual applications to North Ayrshire licensing board to extend their opening hours.

It differs from the policy in Aberdeen, where a blanket 03:00 closing time has been approved, and Glasgow, where pubs will be able to remain open until 30 minutes after the final whistle.
