For the first time in 50 years, states members have decided to change the system

The States Assembly has agreed that the Licensing Assembly will no longer have the power to grant alcohol licences.

The power has been moved to the Regulatory Directorate after an amendment to an original proposal by the minister for sustainable economic development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, was approve by politicians.

The minister had originally proposed to move the licensing power to the Alcohol and Gambling Commission but, following feedback from States members, put forward the amendment to move it to the directorate instead.

It is the first time in 50 years, that States members have decided to change the system, taking the licensing powers away from the Royal Court.

States members also agreed to create an Alcohol Policy Group, consisting of three ministers and two constables, which will be responsible for formulating policy.

The Alcohol Policy Framework will be presented to the States Assembly to vote on.
