A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found injured in a street.

Norfolk Police was called to Catherine Gardens, Thorpe St Andrew, close to Norwich, at about 23:45 GMT on Saturday and a woman in her 40s was declared dead at the scene.

The BBC understands armed officers carried out the arrest of a man in his 60s in Dereham Road on Sunday morning. He remains in police custody.

A police spokesperson said it was thought the man and woman knew each other.

Officers remain at both locations and Yarmouth Road is expected to be closed for several hours from its junction with Pound Lane to the junction with School Avenue.

Det Supt Stacey Murray said: "We are in the early stages of this investigation, working to establish the sequence of events which led to the woman's death.

"However, we do believe this to be an incident in which both parties are known to each other."

She appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

Part of Dereham Road, close to the junction with Bowthorpe Road, has also been sealed off

Part of Dereham Road, close to its junction with Bowthorpe Road and on the western side of the city, has also been sealed off by police.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told the BBC she saw armed police arrive to make an arrest in the early hours of the morning.

"I saw some flashing lights and looked out of the window and they'd cordoned off the road," she said.

"Then all I saw was a bunch of police officers in full gear with guns.

"They just said 'get on the ground'.

"There wasn't too much cufuffle but it was shocking to watch."

She said a man came out of a house with his hands out and was arrested without "too much struggle".

The operation took about an hour, she said.

Forensic officers have been seen entering a semi-detached house, inside the 35m-long (115ft) cordon.
