Passengers at a terminal at Birmingham Airport were evacuated following an unknown incident.

The airport said it affected baggage reclaim and immigration which led to officials evacuating the North terminal but passengers have since been able to return.

Images posted on social media showed dozens of people standing outside the building with emergency crews at the scene.

West Midlands Fire Service said firefighters were sent to the airport, after reports of smoke in a baggage reclaim area. The airport said the evacuation was a precautionary measure, as the safety of passengers was a priority.

They confirmed that the rest of the airport was operating as normal with security remaining open.

"Following the evacuation of baggage reclaim and immigration areas in the North Terminal, West Midlands Fire Service has confirmed it is safe for passengers to return, as the incident is now resolved," an airport spokesperson said.

We are working to move all displaced passengers back into the terminal as quickly as possible.

We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused some of our passengers. Safety is our number one priority and we thank people for their patience and our partners for their support."
